The Third Option

If Ahmedinejad’s Iranian nuclear weapons development program is successful in building nuclear arms plus missiles capable of delivering them to their targets, Iran will become a threat to the entire civilized world. Today there only seem to be two options for dealing with a nuclear-armed Iran being discussed. One can be called the United Nations option: negotiate – negotiate – negotiate. The second one could be called the Israeli option: bomb – bomb – bomb.

The first option results in endless talking leading to no meaningful conclusion or acceptable resolution of the problem.  The second option could lead to a full-scale war or only to a partial war. On the other hand, it could lead to total or partial destruction of Iran’s nuclear weapons program, or it could lead to a Middle East War. None of these are good options.

However, there is a third option, one not publicly talked about even though it may be more desirable and more achievable than either of the other two. I’m speaking of “regime change.” It is not Iran’s nuclear weapons that are the problem; it is the Mullahs who control them who are the problem.

Before the Mullahs came to power Iran enjoyed a stable, responsible government and under the Shah there would have been somewhat less concern if Iran gained control of  nuclear weapons. But the Mullahs who control Iran today are as erratic, fanatical and irresponsible as their president, Mahmoud Ahmidinejad. For the safety of the world, they can never be allowed to have access to nuclear weapons -- not now, not ever!

As a result and in every way possible, the authority and control of  Iran’s Mullahs and their government should be weakened and undermined. All legitimate Iranian groups now working for overthrow of Iran’s government should be encouraged and supported in their efforts.

One such group is the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, usually referred to as the MEK, which has been working in various places around the world for many years to free Iran’s people from the slavery and oppression of the Mullahs. The MEK should be embraced and supported by all democratic governments.

A second group of displaced Iranians who are opposed to the Mullahs is located in Camp Ashraft, Iraq and currently protected from the Mullahs by U.S. Forces under the Fourth Geneva Convention. This group faces the possibility of being betrayed by the U.S. State Department into the hands of Iran's Mullahs, which would be a criminal act on our part.

Supporting the overthrow of Iran’s Mullahs may prove to be better than either of the first two options: endless negotiations on the one hand or some kind of military confrontation on the other. Considering the current political conditions in Iran, its support of radical Islamic terrorists, and its irrational pursuit of nuclear weapons, regime change may present the most rational option.
