He Is What He Is
President Obama is like a back up quarterback who is put in the game in the fourth quarter and tosses a game winning pass which is intercepted. He then blames the starting quarterback for the loss.
Nothing happens in the Obama administration accidentally. Every step, every action, every word is carefully and skillfully choreographed in advance. When Attorney General Eric Holder referred to America as a nation of racial cowards it garnered a mild rebuke from the President. Most likely it was a trial balloon that failed to lift off the ground. Had Holder’s comment been well received by the public and the news media, my guess is that Obama would have taken credit for it.
Since he has been sworn in as President his actions seem to mirror the words of the old song, “Oh yes, I’m a great pretender.” He says one thing and under cuts its meaning with pronouncements that indicate the opposite and his soaring rhetoric fails to match the reality of the situation.
For America to recover from its economic recession it needs Obama to single-mindedly focus on reviving the economy. Instead he’s using the crisis as a vehicle to advance an ambitious long-term left-wing political agenda to reengineer American traditions, institutions and the U.S. economy. Does anyone really believe that in the middle of this economic disaster, the President should be focusing his valuable time and attention on windmills and romancing Iran, Hugo Chavez of Venezuela and Castro of Cuba?
Obama says he wants bipartisan ideas and support. Is that demonstrated when the Republican Party is not consulted nor even given time to read a major bill prior to being forced to vote? Throughout the presidential campaign he declared that America should work to heal its racial divides. Yet time and again he played the race card deliberately creating racial tension, mistrust and division.
Is it Obama’s conceit – or perhaps his cockiness – that allows him to so easily ignore the blatant inconsistencies which have become part of his presidential recitative. On the other hand, perhaps he really believes that he can talk his way around any problem, foreign or domestic.
Openly, publicly, piously he tells us that he will not sign a bill with earmarks, that he will go through each bill line by line and eliminate all earmarks. But at the same time he deliberately looks away as nearly ten thousand earmarks are added to his $410 billion dollar -- package. Then, without blinking or embarrassment he announces to the public that to save the country, regretfully, he is forced by events to sign the bill -- but it will never happen again. That is, not until the next time.
As he did throughout last year’s presidential campaign and as he continues to do now that he is President, his pronouncements are mostly vague generalities. When he promises that policy details will be added later by his staff, very few are. Throughout the campaign his answer to every substantive inquiry was “change,” and the news media and the public docilely accepted “change’s” formless promises at face value. The true character of President Obama and his administration has been dramatically demonstrated by his attempts to publicly distance himself from the “behind closed door” signings of legislation and presidential directives.
During the campaign he said, “I have done more to take on lobbyists than any other candidate in this race. I don’t take a dime of their money, and when I am president, they won’t find a job in my White House.” The truth of the matter is just the reverse. President Obama has already hired close to twenty-five lobbyists to be part of his administration.
Repeatedly and proudly he has proclaimed that his administration will be “the most open and transparent in history.” So far it has been just the opposite. For example, he has promised the American people that they will have at least five days to read “online” the contents of all bills before they are signed. Then he turns around and signs a $787 billion dollar stimulus bill unread by the Congress and the public.
This is not just about the Obama Administration’s pursuing a radical far-left political agenda. It is also about carrying out a revolution, about massing all governmental power in the White House under the control of President Obama and his minions. That is why so many policy and cabinet areas are assigned a czar, someone from the White House to keep them under tight control. Now we are engaged in a fierce struggle for the mind and soul of the kind of America our ancestors founded, versus an America fashioned in Obama’s image.
Nothing demonstrates this better than Senator Judd Gregg’s recent appointment and sudden resignation as Commerce Secretary. What Judd Gregg didn’t know until after he had committed to accepting the job and after it was thought too late for him to back out without great embarrassment, was that Obama planned to strip the census function and the Commerce czar oversight function out of the Commerce Department and place them under the White House Chief of Staff.
This was not, as has been reported by the news media, an attempt to politicize the census. This was a raw, behind closed doors, Chicago style power grab to strip a cabinet officer of his authority. But Obama misjudged the character and integrity of Sen. Gregg. Once Gregg recognized that he was being sucked into Obama’s sleazy sewer he jumped ship, knowing that if the census function could be stripped out of his department without his prior knowledge and approval, it might not be long before other powers were similarly stripped out.
The President is a busy man. Not only is he busy consolidating power in the White House, he is also busy surrounding himself with a cult of personality. Slowly and subtly he is trying to transfer the allegiance of his political co-dependents from the Federal Government to the person of Obama.
The more formidable challenge is shifting to his person the allegiance of the nation’s military leadership and senior governmental bureaucracy. It is sort of like the little blue rainbow badges which replaced the American eagle badges during the campaign. No doubt the idea was to shift trust and allegiance from traditional historic patriotism to the person of Obama, because supposedly only Obama can solve the nation’s problems, meet the nation’s needs, get things done for the people and safeguard our future and our children’s future.
It would not be surprising to me to see an Obama initiated mass retirement and transfer of senior admirals, generals and government officials. Then, if you work your way far enough down into a stack of candidates who are available for top leadership positions in either the military or the federal government, eventually you will find men and women eager to serve a new President provided promotion is offered as part of the package.
In 55 BC Cicero wrote, “The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of Officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to
foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.”
We know how that saga ended, so we don’t have to watch the Obama movie play all the way to the final credits to know how it too will end. It is what it is -- he is what he is.
